The four castles added to the UNESCO list on 12th of July are scattered across Bavaria, and they are united by one extraordinary figure: King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Now officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the castles of Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, Schachen, and Herrenchiemsee are each more breathtaking than the last.

To us, it felt as though they had long held this honor – particularly Neuschwanstein, the most iconic of them all. Also known as the ‘Cinderella Castle’, it rises alone atop a rugged cliff, framed by a dramatic Alpine panorama. With its romantic turrets and dreamlike design, it has long been considered the epitome of a fairytale castle - and rightly so.

Neuschwanstein was the first of the four retreats commissioned by King Ludwig II as his personal sanctuary. Its design was inspired by the mythical world of Wagner’s operas, the 19th-century fascination with the Orient, and Ludwig’s great idol, Louis XIV, the French Sun King.

These castles offer not just architectural splendor, but a journey into the imaginative and eccentric soul of a king – now globally recognized for their cultural and historic significance.

Could this sound like the perfect addition to your program in Germany?
